The American Med Spa Association (AmSpa) recently released a comprehensive and detailed report of the state of the industry for medical spas in the U.S. (2019 Report).
The 2019 Report, which uses data collected from providers across the industry, was designed to help medical aesthetic and medical spa professionals understand the realities of the industry and make more informed decisions on how to structure ownership, who can perform medical spa services, and even how much to compensate staff.
To compile the 2019 Report, AmSpa worked with the research firm Gordian Solutions Group, LLC, who conducted an online survey of medical spa owners. The information obtained from the survey was used to compile the most accurate and informative insights into areas like the demographics for med spa professionals and patients, med spa ownership structure, the most profitable procedures, business statistics and patient spending habits.
This report comes at a crucial time as the medical spa industry is growing at an increasingly rapid rate, and becoming one of the leading growth industries in the nation. At the same time, up until now, there has been a lack of information sharing among med spa professionals, resulting in a data-sparse industry.
The 2019 Report aims to close that information gap by providing metrics on financials, operations, treatment popularity, compensation, start-up costs, and effectiveness of marketing methods.
The 2019 Report highlights a staggering growth in the med spa industry. For instance, in 2018 alone, 5,431 new medical spas opened in the U.S. The average revenue for a medical spa in 2018was $1,526,382, which is a 9% increase since 2017.
Interestingly, researchers found that 63% of medical spas in the U.S. are owned by non-physicians and 36% of med spas have no medical director at all.
An executive summary of the 2019 Medical Spa State of the Industry Report is available to AmSpa Basic Members; the full report is available for free to AmSpa Plus Members and can be purchased by non-members.
